El 'past perfect' sirve para hablar de acciones que ocurrieron antes que otra acción también pasada.

Ya vimos en el nivel 3 que la forma más sencilla de referirse al pasado es mediante el 'simple past'. Sin embargo, cuando narramos hechos que ocurrieron en el pasado pero no al mismo tiempo, debemos emplear también tiempos distintos. En concreto, para las acciones que ocurrieron en el pasado pero antes que otras acciones también pasadas empleamos el 'past perfect'.
*We got home to find that the dog had broken the lamp.
Llegamos y encontramos con que el perro había roto la lámpara.
Un error bastante frecuente, incluso entre los nativos, es usar el pasado simple dos veces.
We got home and the dog broke the lamp.
Eso realmente quiere decir que al llegar, el perro rompió la lámpara.
- La fórmula para su construcción es: PASADO DEL VERBO TO HAVE + PARTICIPIO DEL VERBO PRINCIPAL: The dog had broken the lamp.
- La forma negativa se construye poniendo la partícula 'not' tras el verbo auxiliar 'had'. Ambos pueden contraerse formando 'hadn't'.
When I met you I hadn't been to Los Ángeles.
Cuando te conocí no había estado en Los Ángeles.

| 7. A la hora que llegaron ya había empezado el partido. | 7. By the time they arrived the game had already started. |
| 8. ¿Nunca habías conocido a mi tío? | 8. You had never met my uncle? |
| 9. Ellos creen que perdieron porque nunca habían jugado antes. | 9. They think they lost because they had never played before. |
| 10. Nos enfadamos mucho cuando nos dimos cuenta de que lo habíamos hecho mal. | 10. We got really angry when we realized that we had done it incorrectly. |
| 11. Cuando el documento llego a mi sucursal no lo habías firmado todavía. | 11. When the document got to my branch you hadn't signed it yet. |
| 12. No probamos los aperitivos porque ya habíamos comido. | 12. We didn't try the appetizers because we had already eaten. |
| 13. Cuando fui a arrancar el coche vi que alguien había rayado la puerta. | 13. When I went to start the car I saw that somebody had scratched the car. |
| 14.Ella había perdido un montón de peso. | 14. She had lost a lot of weight. |
| 15. El capitán no pudo subir al barco porque había estado bebiendo. | 15. The captain couldn't get on the ship because he had been drinking. |
| 16. ¿Fue la primera vez que le habías visto? | 16. Was it the first time you had ever seen him? |
| 17. Habíamos dicho que jamás volveríamos, pero fuimos de todos modos. | 17. We had said that we would never go back, but we went anyway. |
| 18. Cuando llamaste acabábamos de llegar. | 18. When you phoned we had just arrived home. |
| 19. El coche nunca se había averiado antes de ayer. | 19. The car had never broken down before yesterday. |
| 20. Ella no había hablado con su hermano desde hace un año. | 20. She hadn't talked to her brother for a year. |
| 21. Dijeron que no habían oído la noticia. | 21. The said they hadn't heard the news. |
| 22.Cuando llegasteis ya habían limpiado el piso. | 22. When you got there they had already cleaned the apartment. |
| 23. Descubrimos en el hospital que tu hermana se había roto la pierna. | 23. We discovered at the hospital that your sister had broken her leg. |
| 24. ¿Por qué no habían llegado los muebles? | 24. ¿Why hadn't the furniture arrived? |
| 25. ¿Se lo había enseñado antes? | 25. ¿Had you shown it to him before? |
